Gothic 1 Remake was first announced in 2021, what with THQ Nordic holding the rights to the property after acquiring Piranha Bytes, the makers behind the original Gothic. With a steady stream of gameplay, story and world-building trailers, the game led to good levels of interest, especially among the crowd that had heard of Gothic 1, but not played it; and of course among fans of the series.
Gothic 1 Remake launched on 5th June 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series S/X, and PC. The game was largely well -received by the gaming community, which felt that it stayed true to the original, with all the difficulty, survival led aspects of the original finding their way into the remake as well, dressed up appropriately with new graphics and a visual overhaul. The clunky combat, difficult controls, and some balancing issues were the key reasons that did not make the game get a higher score on reviews. The game went on to sell 500k copies in the first week of release.
We at TheGamesWatch loved the game, and felt that the world-building and the overall atmosphere more than made up for the combat and other issues.
