Gothic 1 Remake – How to Unlock the Mountain Fortress Chest

Since Gothic 1 Remake takes pride in its lockpicking mechanic, you will find this system scattered all across the map. Luckily, some chests cannot be lockpicked but will require a key instead. That will send you on a hunt to find the key in question and uncover the treasures within.​

Gothic 1 Remake – Mountain Fortress Overview​

​Mountain Fortress Chest Location​

You will encounter the Mountain Fortress while completing the Focus at the Mountain Fortress quest. Find this quest at the southern end of Old Camp, where a stone golem blocks the bridge. In front of it is an NPC named Lester who needs your help getting across. I used a blunt weapon to deal extra damage to the golem and get rid of him.

​Lester will escort you to the Mountain Fortress, where you need to help him deal with the harpies in and around the castle. He will lead you up a flight of stairs, where you can speak with him on a balcony while still clearing harpies. Then, continue to the next flight of stairs and go to the puzzle room.

​Mountain Fortress Puzzle Solution​

The hint for the puzzle is to check out the large painting of three animals in the dining area. Memorize the animals on the painting and the order they appear in. Then, walk into the room with several bookshelves and check the top shelves to find the same taxidermied animals from the painting. Head over to each shelf in order, starting with the giant snake creature, followed by the wolf, and finally, the mole rat. ​

Interact with the shelf to pull out the books within it, after which you will gain access to the hidden room. Head up the stairs to find a ladder going up to the attic. Loot the chest in the attic, then jump down the large hole in the wall. Turn around and go through the two doorways to find a locked chest at the corner of the room.​

How to Get the Mountain Fortress Chest Key​

To find the key, exit the room with the locked chest and go across the hall towards the other archway. You will find a flight of stairs on your right that will lead you to an opening in the wall. The next step will require climbing skills, so come back later if you haven’t unlocked it yet.​

Cling to the ledge and make your way to the left of the wall. You will find an opening at the top. Climb up to the opening and get inside the hole, then continue to take the stairs all the way up to the roof. You will find the locked chest here that contains the key. You can unlock the chest using the following lockpick combination.​

3. Plate 1 – Left x2
4. Plate 4 – Right x3
5. Plate 5 – Left x3
6. Plate 6 – Left x3
7. Plate 3 – Left x2
8. Plate 2 – Right x1
9. Plate 6 – Left x4
10. Plate 2 – Right x2
11. Plate 6 – Left x1
12. Plate 1 – Right x1
13. Plate 5 – Right x1
14. Plate 6 – Right x1

Completing the Quest​

Return to the locked chest below and use the key on it to unlock it and get its contents. As for the rest of the quest, exit the room with the chest and go through the large opening on the wall on your right. You will find a glowing blue orb below. ​

This orb will be protected by various enemies, so take them all out one by one. Interact with the orb once the area is cleared out to get the Focus from Mountain Fortress. Return to Lester and speak to them, then speak to Saturas to complete the quest.​
