Gothic 1 Remake – How to Get the Key from Aleph

In Gothic 1 Remake, you can swindle some of the NPCs to reveal treasures. One of the more gullible NPCs you will meet is Ulbert, who will let it slip that he is guarding something valuable. But you need to find the key to unlock the chest first before you can claim the valuables inside.​

Gothic 1 Remake – Ulbert’s Storage Shed Quest Overview​

​Ulbert’s Storage Shed Quest Guide​

The quest starts off at the Old Mine after talking to Ulbert. If you haven’t unlocked the Old Mines yet, you need to complete The Lost Apprentice quest from Cor Kalom at the Swamp Camp. But you can also make your way over there if you have the Old Camp map and travel north. From inside the mine, take the ladder going down and go down the ramps to the lower floors of the mine.

​You will eventually reach a second ladder going down. At the bottom of this ladder is where Ulbert will reside. Speak to him to start Ulbert’s Storage Shed side quest. Offer him a drink to get on his good side first; any drink will do. I had some extra wine in the inventory, but even basic beer is enough.

​He will let slip that he is guarding some supplies, but has lost the key to the storage. He will also tell you that he suspects Aleph is behind the missing key.​

Aleph Location​

Head up the ladder after completing the conversation with Ulbert. Continue to go up the ramp back to the first ladder. Right behind the first ladder is another passage you can go through to find a second ladder going down. Jump down to the mining site and look amongst the miners for a person named Aleph. ​

Ask him about the storage key, and he will ask you to pay up some nuggets for it. Although for me, since I snitched on him to Brandick, I had to pay 100 nuggets upfront for the key. If you haven’t done that and if you can pick your ore nugget amount, then go for either 30 or 50. 30 nuggets will give you the key, but 50 will give you the key and the Ring of Power.​

Unlocking the Chest​s

Return to Ulbert and tell him that Ian is looking for him. He will walk away, after which you can use the key on the chest behind him. There is another chest behind the wall, so walk around the first chest and unlock that chest with the same key. Return to Ulbert after that to complete the quest and get 75 XP points.​

How to Cheese the Ulbert’s Storage Shed Quest​

If you don’t want to waste time finding the key, then offer Ulbert a drink to start the quest. After he mentions the missing key and ends the conversation, speak to him again and tell him that Ian is looking for him. He will walk away, which gives you some time to lockpick the chest. Below is the lockpicking solution for the first chest.​

What does the Ring of Power do?​

When equipped, the Ring of Power will increase your strength by +5.

​Can I use the key on any other chest?​

No, the key can only be used to unlock the two chests near Ulbert and won’t have any other use after the quest ends.
