Sometimes, things will get overwhelming, and you might end up getting stressed out, which isn’t really good for your mental health in the long term.

Project Zomboid – Stress Overview
| Triggers | Being attacked, going near corpses, getting hurt, running out of supplies, phobias |
| How to reduce | Staying safe, having enough supplies, smoking, alcohol, resting |
| What stress does | Induces panic, which reduces accuracy, CRIT damage, and melee damage |
How Does Stress Influence Panic
Generally, playing the game as safely as possible is the best way to reduce stress. Frequent encounters with zombies and other enemies will quickly drain your mental health. Plus, if you can’t find enough supplies like ammo, food, or even basic shelter and clothes, these will leave you vulnerable, which further induces stress. The more you are kept in a stressful situation, the faster panic sets in.
There are several triggers that will bring out stress in your character. Zombie encounters, seeing dead bodies, surviving outdoors, and phobias will all trigger a state of stress. The more you encounter these unwanted triggers, it will evolve into panic. If you keep your panicked state active for a long time, it will further evolve into different tiers of Panic Moodles.
There are four stages to the Panic Moodle, and each stage offers worse debuffs. The more your character stays stressed and onsets panic, the more drastic the debuffs get.
| Panic Moodle | Stat |
| Slight Panic | -1.3% CRIT chance rate. |
| Panic | -2.3% CRIT chance rate, -10% decreased melee damage, reduced accuracy. |
| Strong Panic | -3.9% CRIT chance rate, -20% decreased melee damage, reduced accuracy. |
| Extreme Panic | -5.2% CRIT chance rate, -30% decreased melee damage, reduced accuracy. |
How to Reduce Panic

Panic will usually go away on its own after several months, as long as you avoid the triggers that created panic in the first place. If you take a rest in a panicked state, your character might keep waking up, resulting in being restless and unrested throughout the day. That’s why it is important to reduce and eliminate all panic before getting into the next steps of reducing stress.
Some traits like Brave will work on reducing Panic drastically, while continuously facing zombies will also make you more immune to their encounter later on. In case your character has any phobia, you should try to avoid them as much as possible. If all this fails, then consuming alcohol, smoking, stress eating, and consuming beta-blockers will reduce some form of stress and panic.
FAQs
Where can I find Beta Blockers?
Beta blockers are found the same way as other items in the game, by scavenging homes and checking out shelves and cabinets.
How do I light cigarettes?
If you can’t find a lighter, light up a stove, then equip the cigarette and interact with the stove to light it up. If you have a lighter, then the process is much easier.
My panic level isn’t lowering; what do I do?
If any of the above methods aren’t working, then the only thing you can do is stay indoors and wait for the panic meter to reset. It could take a long time, so you need to rest, eat, and do any leisure activity until the panic status effect disappears.
