Solarpunk – How to Cultivate Farmland

    By Kirthana KJune 9, 2026Updated:June 9, 20264 Mins Read

    Key Points

    • Building a plot of soil for growing crops will require two pieces of equipment.
    • You will require a hoe and a watering can to help you grow crops.
    • You also need to scavenge the overworld for plants and harvest them for seeds.

In Solarpunk, you need to learn how to be self-sufficient to survive on your own. Your first order of business should be to get food. While you can get food during exploration, this might not always be reliable. Rather, you need to learn to grow and harvest your own food at your base.

How to Create and Tend a Farm

Having farmland will help you grow all the required crops for food instead of scavenging around the map for them. I did find food across the various POIs on the map, but scavenging for them made me lose out on valuable time doing other things to make my base better. Luckily, whenever you pick up a plant or fruit, you will get its seeds in your inventory. With these seeds, you can grow crops, which makes it a lot easier to get food.

Now, once you have a couple of seeds from varying crops and fruits, you need to select a plot of land to build a farm. First, build a crafting bench or press F to bring up the crafting menu. Craft yourself a hoe, which will require 3x sticks and 2x stone.

You can find sticks and stones on the ground while scavenging, and sticks can also be crafted at the crafting table if you have wood. To get wood, you need to chop down trees using an axe. As for stones, breaking down bigger rocks with the pickaxe will give you stones. Take both materials to the crafting table to get a hoe.

    How to Plant Crops

Grab your hoe and point it at the ground. An outline of a plot of land will appear in front of you. If the area selected is viable, then the outline will appear blue. Otherwise, it will turn red if the area you have picked is not suited to create farmland. You will get a prompt to use your hoe and dig out some soil, so do that to create a plot of land to plant crops in. Pick your seeds from your inventory and plant them in the soil.

    How to Get a Watercan

At the very basic level, you can craft a wooden water can at the crafting table. This will just require 4x wood to craft. Once crafted, equip the watercan and head over to any water body nearby. Stand at the edge of the water while looking into the pool of water.

You will get a prompt to fill the can with water. Do just that and return the can to the hotbar for later use, or use it on the newly planted soil. Now all you need to do is wait for the crop to grow and continue to water it until they do.

    FAQs

Can I automate the watering process?

Yes, if you have learnt to build sprinklers, you can set them up to water your crops anytime.

How long will it take to grow crops?

It depends on what type of crop you have planted, as each crop will have varying timings to reach full growth. Keep watering and checking up on them frequently to see the progress.

Can I build a farmland early on?

Yes, you just need a hoe and a watering can to start growing crops at your base.
