How to Prepare for Thomas Richards Boss Fight
Prepare Healing Items and Consumables

Since this will be your first boss fight, you need to prepare yourself early on. First, stock up on healing items like bandages and health potions, which are pretty easy to make in the early game. If you haven’t crafted any bandages yet, collect Plant Fiber and turn it into Coarse Fabric. Then, use the Coarse Fabric at the Workbench to create a Bandage. I stocked up on around 15 bandages for the fight.
For healing, I had success carrying 30 to 40 Health Potions. These restore 55% of your max HP instantly. You need to progress a bit in the game to craft these, since you’ll need unique items like Alchemical Base and either Healing Herbs or Undead Essence. Most are found inside chests around POIs, especially in the Ancient Ruins.
Next, go to your cooking fire and craft a few Coconut Milk with Bananas. These boost Max HP and give 5 Endurance. You only need a banana and a coconut for this dish.
Add Attack Buffs, Improve Weapons and Gear

Now that we have the healing requirements out of the way, you need to add buffs to your attacks. Crafting the Elixir of Cruelty will increase damage by 8% and last 15 minutes. To craft the Elixir of Cruelty, you will require the Alchemical Base, a Boar Tusk, and a Pearl. Take them to the Stove and Pot to craft the elixir.
Leveling up your equipment is also crucial for a clean win against Thomas Richards. Currently, you can upgrade your gear and equipment to max Level 5, so go ahead and do just that. Focus on upgrading all your armor pieces, your melee weapon, and your ranged weapon to max level.
Wear the Right Armor
Besides elixirs, wearing the right armor will make a world of difference. Plus, if you add 2 – 4 pieces of an armor set, the buffs granted will be greater than just wearing one piece of the armor set. For the fight, I decided to mix and match with 2x of the Conquistador’s Armor set and 2x of the Pikeman Set.
The Conquistador’s Armor Set provided the much-needed damage resistance, while the Pikeman added extra HP. Some other sets to try out are the Filbustier’s set, Privateer’s set, and the Tracker’s set. These armor piece blueprints are found around the various POIs. If you can’t find them, then check the Tortuga’s Faction Provisioners’ store to purchase them directly.
Best Weapons
Before you sort out your weapons for the fight, you should focus on improving your Talents and character stats. I preferred using ranged weapons for the fight, so I focused on improving my Precision, Mastery, and a bit of Vitality.
As for Talents, I added a point or two here and there under the Marksman talent branch. But if you prefer melee attacks, then focus on improving your Strength and Endurance with the right Talent.
Since I was going completely ranged, I chose to fight using the Buccaneer’s Friend. But even a basic Blunderbuss is enough for the fight.
Thomas Richards Boss Fight Guide

I initially thought that the Thomas Richards boss fight might be challenging, but truthfully, it wasn’t. Before I went into the cave, I set up a tent right outside the cave entrance. That way, if I failed, I could quickly use this as a respawn point.
One thing to note about Thomas Richards is that he is a purely melee boss. He just has three basic attacks:
- Double/triple swings
- Slam attacks
- Rush and grab
Besides this, he might toss a couple of bombs around the arena, too. Most of his attacks are easily telegraphed by indicators of where his attacks will land. Keep an eye out for a sparkling red area before he lands his attack, so you have some time to move out of the way. If he grabs you, then it is impossible to release yourself, so take the damage and immediately use healing items.
How to Cheese Thomas Richards Boss Fight
The only way I found to cheese the fight is to keep my distance and shoot him with my gun. Keep running around the arena and aim and shoot from a distance. If I hid or took time to attack, his shield would regenerate. I couldn’t give him the opportunity to do this, so I kept shooting as much as possible. This quickly brought his health down, and I could win the fight against Thomas Richards.
