Pokémon Pokopia – How To Build Smooth Tall Grass Habitat

    By Jordan BlakeMarch 7, 2026Updated:July 24, 20263 Mins Read

    Key Points

    • The Smooth Tall Grass Habitat is required to give Onix a proper home after rescuing it from the cave.
    • You need 1x Smooth Rock and 4x Dry Tall Grass to build the habitat.
    • The Smooth Rock can be found inside the same cave where you originally encounter Onix.

After rescuing Onix from the cave in Pokopia, you’ll need to create a proper habitat for it. However, this requires gathering a few specific materials. The game doesn’t clearly explain where to find some of these items. Below you will find the exact steps I followed to build the habitat.

How to Get Smooth Rock in Pokopia

The Smooth Rock is not crafted or available in store in Pokopia. Instead, you can simply pick it up from the environment early in the game. Follow these steps to find it:

    • Head back to the cave near the Withered Wasteland area where Onix was originally trapped behind rocks.
    • Walk through the cave entrance and continue forward until you reach the section where the path turns toward Onix’s location.
    • Before turning toward the spot where Onix was imprisoned, check the left side of the cave wall. You should see a glowing Poké Ball item sitting on a small rock ledge.
    • Interact with the Poké Ball to obtain the Smooth Rock.

When I first did this quest, I completely walked past the item because I was focused on the path ahead. It’s easy to miss if you don’t look to the side while moving through the cave.

How to Get Dry Tall Grass in Pokopia

How to Get Dry Tall Grass in Pokopia

Dry Tall Grass is another requirement for Onix’s habitat, and the game does not clearly explain how to create it. Here’s how to obtain it:

    • Look for ground that has not been watered by rain or streams. The soil should appear dry (like in the image above) rather than dark and moist.
    • Stand on the dry ground and use Leafage. This will cause Tall Grass to grow from that patch.
    • Create four patches of Dry Tall Grass to prepare the habitat.

Once you have the Smooth Rock and four Dry Tall Grass, you can now build Onix’s habitat.

    • Arrange the four Dry Tall Grass patchesin a 2×2 square formation on the ground.
    • Put the Smooth Rock directly beside the square of grass.
    • If everything is placed correctly, the game will recognize it as a Smooth Tall Grass Habitat.
    • Speak to Onix to complete the request and let it settle into its new home. This habitat is specifically designed for Onix, so you typically only need to build it once.

    FAQs

Can you craft Smooth Rock in Pokémon Pokopia?

No. The Smooth Rock is not a craftable item. You must find it as a pickup inside the cave where you first encounter Onix.

Why isn’t my Tall Grass counting as Dry Tall Grass?

The grass must be created on dry soil. If the ground gets watered by rain or nearby streams, it will not count as Dry Tall Grass.

Can other Pokémon stay in the Smooth Tall Grass Habitat?

No. This habitat is specifically tied to Onix, so building additional ones usually won’t attract other Pokémon.
