Barony – How to Survive Ambushes

    By Kirthana KJuly 1, 2026Updated:July 20, 20263 Mins Read

    Key Points

    • Ambush boxes can spawn across different levels, and they appear rather randomly.
    • You can run away from the enemies that appear out of the ambush box, or fight them.
    • Most of the time, the enemies that spawn in ambush boxes are easy to deal with.

Barony is full of surprises around every corner. If you aren’t careful, an unexpected ambush can happen while unlocking chests for loot. You might get attacked by a random enemy that springs forth, or the chest itself might attack you.

Every corner of each level holds a surprise, and it’s not the good kind either. Besides the usual enemies like trolls and gnomes, there are strange ambush boxes that will release random enemies like bats or turn into biting mimics if you get too close to them. Finding them always catches me off guard, so I had to come up with tactics to avoid losing health.

    Reduce Inventory Load

When you encounter an ambush box, running away should be your first priority. But if you are encumbered, then this could be a problem. The best way to avoid the extra luggage is to keep your inventory light and avoid picking up everything in sight.

If you still want to keep your items, check them for any duplicates or unnecessary items. Try not to pick up everything in the early game; only keep items of value. You can also distribute the items between your teammates until you find a vendor to sell these items.

    Block or Attack

Early in the game, you can use your torch to block any incoming attacks, and that applies to bats or other enemies that suddenly leap out of ambush boxes. If you have a shield, then those would work great against them.

Also, tossable ranged weapons like throwing knives are a lot more effective than bows and arrows, so if you have a few of them, toss them at the enemy from a distance. Spells are also highly effective, so magic classes will have an easier time dealing with ambush enemies.

    Picking the Right Class

If you are still worried about finding ambush boxes and getting mauled, then starting off with the right class is the best way to go about it. Ranged classes and spellcasters have a better chance of beating up whatever the ambush box procures. At the start of the game, opt for the Monk class if you have a very hard time blocking attacks.

    FAQs

How do I know if the box is an ambush box?

One way to find out is to get close to it and see if it springs forth an enemy. You can also use the Ring of Warning to identify which boxes contain enemies.

Why does my health keep lowering even after running away from an ambush box?

Try not to run backwards, as this will slow you down. Rather, turn around and run away with your back towards the ambush box instead.

What enemy spawns can I expect inside the ambush box?

You can find an assortment of different smaller enemies like bats, slimes, and rats that spawn from it. There are also mimic boxes that will attack you outright.
