How to Get Salt in Hytale

    By Amar DeogaonkarJanuary 22, 2026Updated:January 22, 20266 Mins Read

    Key Points

    • Obtain Salt Blocks by either placing fishing traps in water bodies or by purchasing them from the Rootling merchant in the Forgotten Temple to get salt in Hytale.
    • You can process the Salt Blocks into usable Salt for recipes by using the Chef’s Stove.
    • While Salt Blocks can be found as natural deposits, their low occurrence rate makes the fishing trap farming method the best way to get salt in Hytale.

In the tile-based planet of Orbis, Salt serves a more powerful purpose than mere seasoning. Some of the heartiest recipes, such as Caesar Salads and Meat Pies, cannot be made without salt. Unlike standard ores, Salt Blocks do not usually appear as common ore nodes in the Overworld, making them an elusive find.

After a lot of searching, farming, trading, and crafting, I have found some of the best and most reliable methods to get salt in Hytale.

Salt Procurement Methods in Hytale – Overview

Primary Salt Procurement MethodFishing Traps with no bait
Secondary Salt Procurement MethodPurchase from the Rootling Merchant at the Forgotten Temple
Tertiary Salt Procurement MethodNatural Spawning Rare White Mineral Deposits in Coastal Areas and Salt Flats
Processing StationChef’s Stove (converts one Salt Block into five usable Salt units)

How to Get Salt in Hytale

Unlike other ores, gathering salt in Hytale requires a shift from traditional mining to consistent farming or trading. I have found the most reliable and sustainable salt farming method in the game to be using fishing traps, followed closely by trading.

    Best Method: Fishing Traps

This is my favorite method, simply because it is very low-maintenance and offers higher salt yields. It allows you to passively gain huge quantities of salt while you work on your base. Follow these steps to create your own salt farm:

    1. Craft 10 or more Fishing Traps using a Level 2 Farmer’s Workbench.
    2. Find a place in the large body of water, such as a river, a pond, or the Ocean.
    3. Chain at least 10 Traps together to guarantee a higher chance of getting Salt Blocks.
    4. Place the Fishing Traps on Shallow Water Tiles to make them easier to reach.
    5. Do not place any Fishing Baits in these traps to ensure you gain Salt Blocks and not fish.
    6. Return after a few in-game hours to harvest Salt Blocks.

    Important Notes

    • You don’t need to place these traps in deep water. You can just place them on shallow water tiles. Doing so will make harvesting them easier for you and save you some time. Even a simple backyard pool or pond can also get you a few salt blocks in a pinch.
    • Do not use fish bait while setting traps for salt block farming. Setting traps with fish bait will increase the chances of catching fish, while setting traps without bait will increase your chances of catching salt blocks, debris, and other non-fish finds.
    • Set a trap line of at least 10 traps to increase your chances of ‘catching’ salt blocks.

    Second Method: Trading

If you don’t have enough time to farm salt through Fishing Traps, I have another useful method that can get you salt in a few moments. However, you will need to spend some hard-earned Essence of Life to get quick salt.

    1. Travel to the Forgotten Temple biome.
    2. Locate the entrance and travel to the downstairs area.
    3. Locate the Temple’s Central Pillar.
    4. Interact with the Rootling Merchant NPC standing by the Central Pillar.
    5. Navigate to the NPC’s Materials Tab.
    6. Purchase Salt Blocks in exchange for Essence of Life.

Important Note: You can only buy 10 Salt Blocks per interaction with the Forgotten Temple Rootling merchant. The merchant replenishes the stock after every three in-game days. So, if you want to purchase more than 10 Salt Blocks from them, you will have to wait for three in-game days.

    Third Method: Natural Spawns

You can sometimes find white rare mineral ore while exploring the game’s map. I had the most luck finding naturally occurring salt deposits in the Coastal Areas (Salt Flats). Keep in mind that it’s comparatively rare to find sustainable salt deposits this way.

Important Note: This is the method that yields the lowest results. I wouldn’t recommend using this method for reliable farming. I’d always recommend farming for salt through rigging fishing traps near your base or purchasing them from the Rootling Merchant.

How to Process Salt Blocks in Hytale

You can’t use Salt Blocks in your recipes. You need to process these blocks and convert them into usable Salt. Each salt block gives five units of salt when converted using a Chef’s Stove. Here’s how you can process the salt blocks:

    1. Travel to your base.
    2. Construct a Chef’s Stove, if you haven’t already.
    3. Interact with the Chef’s Stove.
    4. Open the Ingredients Tab in the stove’s UI.
    5. Select the Salt icon.
    6. Add your Salt Blocks to the input slot.
    7. Hit Refine.

    FAQs

How can I mine naturally occurring salt blocks?

Use your regular pickaxe to mine any naturally occurring salt blocks. You will have better luck finding them in the coastal areas. However, since they spawn rarely and randomly, I’d strongly suggest investing in some extra fish traps just for farming salt.

    Can Salt Blocks expire?

No. Salt Blocks are non-perishable and won’t expire if kept in your inventory. You can also process these blocks, and the resulting salt units will also never expire.

Can I get salt from fresh water?

Yes. While you will have better luck and higher yield gathering salt from the ocean, you can technically get salt from any body of water. If you have a pond or river near your base, I recommend setting some fish traps without bait to get some salt blocks.

Is there a limit for setting fishing traps?

There’s no hard limit for how many traps you can set at a single time. That being said, I have found that it’s usually best if you chain 10-15 traps together at a single time. This makes managing them and harvesting them easier, as well as offers you a large enough volume to increase your chances of ‘catching’ salt blocks.
