Key Points
- Gnomes do not appear alone and are usually found in groups.
- Low-level pickaxe gnomes found in the mines are easier to beat, but you will often find gnomes near troll spawn points.
- There is also another variant of gnomes called gnome thieves, and these gnome types will carry weapons on them.
As you advance the levels, you will find new enemy types to beat in Barony. After hitting the mines, you will face the gnomes, and they can quickly overpower you if you are not prepared.

How to Find Gnomes
Gnomes are common enemies found around The Gnomish Mines secret level, but they are not limited to this area alone. The hardest level where you will face gnomes is when you reach the level with Thumpus the Troll. The more advanced gnome form, the Gnome Thief, spawns around the Ruins. You will also find gnomes near troll spawn points, but you will encounter more of them in the Gnomish Mines.
How to Deal with Gnomes

Gnomes are annoying since they always travel in groups of two or more. If you are a solo player, you can easily be outnumbered. It’s even more difficult when facing them alongside trolls, but there are ways to manage trolls quite easily. The lower-level gnomes can be easily defeated with your basic melee weapons or can be shot down from afar using ranged weapons like the bow and arrow or spells.
The gnomes that I had a difficult time with are the gnome thieves. These gnome types will always appear in larger groups and also carry weapons. What I would like to do here is to find the Thief Leader and attack them first. Killing the leader will stun all the other members momentarily, giving you enough time to deal with them.
Tips to Beat Gnomes
Usually, you will spot the group of gnomes from a distance. Before you engage in battle, I recommend laying down several traps around the area. Then, equip ranged throwing weapons or lighting or fire spells to deal a lot of damage. Shoot the gnomes from a distance and wait for them to come closer. The traps will take care of the gnomes while you continue to deal damage.
Melee players might have a harder time if they haven’t picked up any spells to cast. Clerics and monk classes will have an easier time managing most enemies, but melee classes like barbarians and warriors need to depend on stealth or traps to lure gnomes towards them. It is best to avoid battling the gnomes as a melee player and use stealth and traps to get around instead.
