TBH: Task Bar Hero doesn’t require your constant attention. But at some point in the game, you will find your hero struggling to pass the level’s boss. That’s when you need to work on unlocking more hero slots to help your team progress.

How to Unlock More Hero Slots
During the initial gameplay, you will get one active hero slot and two locked slots. The game doesn’t really specify how to unlock the next two slots, which had me scrambling for answers. Luckily, the answers were there in the Runes section. Within this section, you can unlock different upgrade items for your characters and your overall gameplay using Gold. You can farm gold quickly by selling items in the Cube.
Once you have enough gold, go through the Runes tree and start unlocking the runes that will lead you to the first Rune of Command. What I did was to unlock the first Rune and unlock the ones right after in a straight line. This helped me reach the first hero unlock rune. After that, focus on unlocking all the runes on the left to get to the final Rune of Command.
How to Equip Heroes
At the start of the game, you get to choose between the Ranger, Knight, and Sorcerer, with the Priest class being unlocked for free in the Shop. After selecting a hero from the loading screen, they will be automatically added to the empty first slot.
After obtaining the second hero slot, select the slot to get a list of available heroes. Select a hero from this list to add them to the group. Repeat this step a final time after unlocking the third slot to get all three heroes.
Best Hero Combinations
Personally, I chose the Priest in my first slot, followed by the Ranger. The Ranger’s speed and ranged attacks helped bypass all the early game enemies, since she has the highest base attack speed. The Priest, on the other hand, kept my hero alive.
For the third slot, you could either add the Knight or the Sorcerer, depending on your gameplay requirements. The Sorcerer adds additional ranged damage along with the Ranger, while the Knight deals with melee damage. But the knight is only useful in early gameplay since he gets weak later on, so switch him out with the Sorcerer once he starts to falter.
If you have the luck to unlock the DLC heroes, then the Hunter and Slayer will prove useful. You can switch out the Ranger with the Slayer add the Hunter in slot three while keeping the Priest. The Hunter’s skills are powerful enough to take down bosses in the later stages, while the Slayer deals massive AoE damage.

Should I focus on unlocking the third hero slot early?
If you have the required amount of gold, then unlocking the third slot early will be beneficial. Otherwise, focus on unlocking the second slot and upgrading your existing heroes to level 20 first. This will help you farm better gear to sell at the Cube and farm gold to unlock the existing Runes first.
Is it necessary to own three heroes?
Yes, farming items and clearing levels become much easier if you have expanded your party. But you can make do with two heroes in early gameplay.
Can I make do with just 1 hero in my team?
It will be very difficult to survive the bosses in the later levels of the game, so you should work on adding more heroes to your team as early as possible.
