Octopath Traveler 0 has side quests that reward you with pretty useful items, and one such quest that you don’t want to miss out on is the Books Overdue quest. Here’s how to go about completing this side quest.

Two out of three books can be obtained easily; the last one will require you to venture into a dungeon to get it. You don’t have to kill any bosses or enemies, as you just have to grab it at the specific location.
Book #1: The King and the Golden Dust | Sufrataljah
Head over to Sufrataljah and then make your way to the market. Now talk to Kindly Millionaire NPC over by the white tent to obtain the book. Unlike other items in his store, the book will come with no cost.
Book #2: Adrift in the Vast River | Donescu
The second book is going to take us to Misty Falls, Donescu. Make your way to the house located southeast of the map. Once you talk to the NPC inside the house, he will inform you that the book is at Misty Falls dungeon in the Riverlands Region.
You will find the Misty Fall dungeon east of Donescu. Once you are in the dungeon, move to the south of the map. Do take a look at the picture above to pinpoint the location of the book in the dungeon.
Book #3: Healing Hot Springs | Berecain
Make your way to Berecain. To your left, you will find an NPC named Hot Springs Enthusiast. When you talk to him, you will get three options: Inquire, Entreat, and Recruit.
Choose Entreat and then select Healing Hot Springs x1 on the right panel to obtain the last book on the list.
After you have acquired all three books, it’s time to head back to Mercedes at Atlasdam, Flatlands Region. She will congratulate you for retrieving all the books and offer 16000 Leaves coins in return, and you will also receive a Librarian’s Amulet x1.

No, you can collect the book in any order possible. As long as you have all three books in your possession, that will be enough to complete the goal.
