What Does Hellrain Do

Hellrain is a weather condition that appears randomly in the game. The main indicator of a Hellrain occurring is the placement of random bombs around your ship that appear suddenly. If you are playing at higher speeds, then it is easy to miss out on these indicators and find your ship half destroyed. Luckily, after playing the game a couple of times, I could pick up certain cues on an approaching Hellrain.
How to Deal with Hellrain
While playing the game, keep an eye on the top right corner. On the timeline, if you find a day covered in a red bar, then you need to set sail immediately before that. You will also get an indicator to set sail on the left, and while this may take up fuel, you need to use it if you are encountering a Hellrain during the early game.
Set to Default Speed
In case you were like me and decided to stay during a Hellrain, then you will spot marked areas around your ship. These areas are marked in red and will resemble other icons on the ship. They will be hard to notice if playing at higher speeds. What I did after finding bombs on the ship was to set my game speed to default first, then pause the game. This gave me an overview of where the bombs were placed.
Disarm Bombs
If the bombs are within reach, then I disarmed them before they damaged my ship. Otherwise, I just let them detonate and plan how to rebuild the destroyed area. Usually, the bombs don’t appear instantly during a Hellrain. It generally takes several hours before they land on your ship, so this should give you enough time to set sail.
Build Makeshift Roof
Another tactic you could use is to build a rooftop structure with cheap wood material over your ship. This will protect the internal structures of the ship from the bombs, and there is a high chance the bombs will land on the makeshift roof instead. In case you plan on moving out instead, don’t forget to deconstruct structures that are placed outside of the ship first before moving on.
FAQs
Can I send my residents to disarm the bombs?
Since the Hellrain event occurs mostly at night, most of your residents will be asleep, making it hard for you to command them.
How often do Hellrains occur?
There are no fixed timings or days for Hellrains to occur. Sometimes, you might go through an entire playthrough without encountering them, while other times they will occur more frequently.
I’m stuck in a Hellrain. Can I still move my ship?
Yes, as long as you move your ship within the first 8 hours, you can avoid the explosives that drop during a Hellrain.
