Before you could do that, there was a series of events you needed to follow to indoctrinate Midas into your village.

Step #1 – Getting Midas Follower
While exploring the mountains of Woolhaven, you will encounter Midas being attacked by a large wolf enemy. This will result in his death, and you get to collect his skull to take to the Hatchery. Tend to the skull for a couple of days until it hatches into a mini version of Midas. Click on him to turn him into a follower.
Step #2 – Trapping Midas
Keep nurturing Midas until he reaches level 7. It will be during this stage that he will show his thieving tendencies and steal from the cult. Eventually, one of the followers will give you a tip on using Wolf Traps to capture him. If you haven’t unlocked a wolf trap yet, you will get it as one of the upgrade perks from Yngya.
Step #3 – Indoctrinating Midas
Place the wolf trap in an area where there are frequent sightings of Midas, then place a gold bar within the trap. Offering altars is one of the more popular areas where you will frequently find him. It could take a couple of days to trap him, but once he is trapped, you get to interact with him and re-educate him to indoctrinate him as a proper follower.
