Key Points
- Staying fit will build up strength over time, allowing you to perform more complex tasks.
- Mostly, you will get fit and gain strength by performing heavy-duty tasks like lifting items, pushing heavy things, and more.
- While performing these tasks, you should take care that you don’t hurt your character in the process.
There are several different ways to take care of yourself in Project Zomboid, and staying active and increasing your strength will improve your endurance to tackle the unknown. Your day-to-day activities might keep you fit, but to increase your strength properly, you need to do some heavy lifting without compromising on your character’s health.

How to Increase Strength

Doing anything in Project Zomboid will help increase strength long term, especially if you push your body’s limit beyond what it can carry. Early on, while in character creation, you can quickly gain strength by assigning certain traits. Stout, Strong, and Athletic traits do improve your strength and fitness levels, so if this is a priority, then assigning points to these traits will give you a head start. You can also exercise if you are in a safe place.
To start exercising, click the Health (heart) icon in the top-left corner, then select the Health tab. Over here, next to your body chart, you will find the option to Exercise. You can select any exercise you want, but my personal favorites to increase strength are push-ups and squats. If you own dumbbells and barbells, you can perform weight overload to increase your limits.
Another great way to increase strength is to do daily tasks that require carrying heavy items. During my early gameplay days, I had to cut down and carry trees around, which gradually increased strength. Lifting heavy boxes regularly and running every day will also increase not just strength but endurance too.
Why Increase Strength
Keeping your character fit has several advantages. First, improved strength will make it easier for you to fight zombies, with or without a weapon. Secondly, you can push heavy items out of the way, clear blockages, and lift things around. This is handy when it comes to clearing out clutter inside homes or moving furniture around. Lastly, you can get better stamina recovery and improved endurance doing day-to-day activities, and your character won’t be as fatigued. Exercising can also boost mood, making it a two-in-one solution.
While performing heavy-duty tasks, you need to keep your character’s capabilities in mind. If they are starting out, then begin with light exercises so they don’t strain their body and cause injury. Running is a safe exercise to do early in the game, followed by bodyweight exercises after gaining enough stamina. By month 6, your character should have enough strength to move furniture and logs around, which is the basis of how drastically your strength can improve in Project Zomboid.
FAQs
Why can’t I use the exercise option?
The exercise option might be temporarily disabled if your Moodles are not in check. A depressed, tired, stressed, or hungry character will refuse to exercise or have reduced XP gained from exercising.
Are there any professions that have increased strength?
Yes, certain professions like firefighters and lumberjacks will have 1 point added to their strength skill already.
How do I know if I am overtraining my character?
Keep a tab on cues like tiredness and fatigue so you don’t overwork your character beyond their limit. Feeding them and giving them ample rest will improve these stats and help with recovery.
