The process of building a Generator can feel a bit tedious. I recommend that you hunt down the materials first before taking on the quest. If you are lucky and have found the book “Ohms and Watts In”, just read it to unlock Generator crafting. If you haven’t, you must complete a quest.

Two of the critical items required for Generator crafting have RNG mechanics. So you have to get lucky to get them. I have also provided an alternative way to acquire the item without getting caught in the RNG system. Once you have a generator, though, your base is all set.
Getting the Generator Knowledge
First, we need to acquire the knowledge of Generator building to craft one; it all comes from a book titled “Ohms and Watts In,” part of a side quest. The side quest can be triggered from an NPC in a Survival Camp.
- Make your way to the northeastern section of the map to reveal a Survival Camp. If you are having difficulty tracking it down, the picture above will help you get to the location.
- Get inside the camp to find a woman called Sue by the campfire. Talk to her and accept the task to build a generator by the blue container. The quest will be titled “Big Help for the Camp.”
The task is simple; all we need to do is craft a generator by gathering all the necessary items. The overlay of the generator will already be on the ground, so you don’t have to enter the build mode to place the Generator overlay.
To craft the Generator, we will need:
- 1x Electrical Cable: Random drop from containers
- 1x Electronics: Dismantle TVs or telephones to obtain Electronics
- 1x Sheet Metal: Salvage a broken car.
- 1x Oil: Random drop from containers
- 1x Generator Engine: Random drop from containers
Note: If luck is not on your side, then you can use the console menu to spawn the items.
Once you obtain all the necessary items, head to the camp and fix up the generator. Then talk to Sue to complete the side quest “Big Help for the Camp”, and you will get the following rewards:
- x1 MRE
- x1 “Ohms and Watts In” book
- 20x 5.56mm Ammo
- 350 EXP
Read the “Ohms and Watts In” to unlock all powered items in the Build menu. The unlock list includes the Generator.
