Key Points
- The Executioner is one of the early-game weapons in Windrose, surpassing the starting Halberd.
- It’s found inside a Decrepit Chest at a shipwreck during the “I Need a Bigger Boat” quest.
- It’s a Rare Melee Halberd with an excellent passive that will come in handy during early-game combat.
Windrose offers a wide range of weapons from Cutlasses to Blunderbusses. However, you won’t have access to them when you’re just starting, so you need to make do. This is where the Executioner comes into play, a great starting Halberd that’s found inside a hidden shipwreck during one of the earlier quests in the game. Here’s how you can get your hands on this melee weapon.

Head to the Shipwreck to the West of the Starting Island

Progress Windrose’s main questline until you meet Doctor Galen at your campsite near the Bonfire. Interact with him to start the “I Need a Bigger Boat” questline, which requires you to find shipwrecks nearby to get one of them afloat. This quest will get you your first working ship in the game, which will make traveling the seas a breeze.
Once you’ve started this quest, use Doctor Galen’s boat to head west/left from the Bonfire on the starting island, as shown in the image above. You’ll encounter a couple of quest markers on your map that indicate potential shipwrecks you can search and repair on multiple smaller islands. However, we only need the shipwreck that’s located to the left to find the Executioner in Windrose.
Open the Decrepit Chest Inside the Shipwreck

When you reach this location, you’ll be greeted by several Thorn Fiddles, which are basically large crabs in Windrose. However, they can deal some serious damage, so I’d suggest taking them out one by one. They spawn far apart from each other, so if you have a weapon already, you can easily target them one at a time and get rid of them for a secure search process.
If you don’t have a weapon equipped, I’d recommend ignoring them and sneaking past them directly to the shipwreck. Inside the shipwreck near the shore, you’ll find a Decrepit Chest. Open the Decrepit Chest and obtain the Executioner, which is an insanely good starting weapon for beginners, since its rarity is Rare (Blue). Up to this point, you’ll most likely have Common weapons, so this will be a nice change of pace.
If you’ve snuck past the Thorn Fiddles, now’s the time to equip the Executioner and put it to the test. The best part about this Halberd is that killing enemies offers stacks of Rage, and each stack will increase your Critical Hit Chance by 10%. This goes up to 30% the more you upgrade the weapon, so it’s definitely a handy weapon to have when you’re sailing the turbulent seas early on in Windrose.
FAQs
Is the Executioner a heavy weapon?
Yes, the Executioner is indeed a heavy Halberd, which means your swings will be slower, but the damage you deal will be significantly more serious than the first weapon you obtain in Windrose.
Is the Executioner a good starting weapon?
Yes, the Executioner is one of the best starting weapons in Windrose, with excellent damage and a solid passive. It’s worth upgrading during the game’s early stages.
Is Executioner the only weapon inside the Decrepit Chest?
No, you’ll find several other useful items, such as Wood and Nails, and even one or two weapons inside the shipwreck’s Decrepit Chest in Windrose.
Doctor Galen doesn’t spawn for me. What do I do?
You need to progress through Windrose’s main quests and build a Bonfire with a campsite on the starting island for Doctor Galen to spawn. If he doesn’t appear still, it could be a bug, so restart the game to get him to appear.
