Half Sword – How to Kick & Block

By Jordan BlakeFebruary 2, 20262 Mins Read

    Key Points

    • Half Sword relies on physics-based combat, so many actions aren’t tied to obvious button prompts.
    • Kicking exists but isn’t listed in the controls, making it easy to miss for new players.
    • Blocking isn’t automatic. You must manually position weapons, shields, or hands to stop attacks.

Half Sword throws players into brutal medieval combat with very little guidance. While swinging a weapon is straightforward, mastering unlisted actions like kicking and blocking is a hassle. But don’t worry, as this guide details how you can kick and block effectively.

How to Kick in Half Sword

How to Kick in Half Sword

Kicking is part of Half Sword’s close-combat system, even though it’s never explained in-game. To perform a basic kick, simply press the Spacebar. This is useful for creating distance or disrupting enemies at close range.

After mastering the normal kick, you can also try out the spin kick. To perform a spin kick, follow the steps given below:

    • Hold Shift to adjust your stance, as your character will always kick with the leg positioned further back.
    • Then press Spacebar to kick and quickly swing your mouse toward the side of that rear leg.
    • Higher mouse sensitivity makes spin kicks easier to pull off.

How to Block in Half Sword

How to Block in Half Sword

Unlike kicking, there is no dedicated block button in Half Sword. Instead, blocking is entirely manual and depends on positioning, timing, and understanding the game’s physics.

When using a sword or similar weapon, hold it in front of your character and slightly move the mouse while holding LMB to deflect incoming strikes. You’re not blocking in the traditional sense, but you’re physically redirecting the attack.

Against overhead strikes, switching to a half-sword grip can be effective. Press RMB to adopt this grip and brace against downward blows more reliably. If you’re carrying a shield, hold RMB and move it toward incoming attacks. Smaller shields like bucklers are more responsive, while larger ones are more restricted in movement.
