Start with a Hunter first, he comes with the useful ability of hunting and collecting meat. There are high chances that you will find a Hunter near your house. In exchange for 240 coin or 34 Leather, the Hunter will ask to join your settlement.
Then, focus on getting an Angler to help with fishing, and Guards to protect your settlement.
Fulfilling Your Settlers’ Needs

Once you have populated your settlement with enough settlers, it’s time to start thinking about their needs. All settlers, expect the Elder, require two basic things:
- Food: Can be cooked using a Campfire and Cooking Pot or Roasting Station. In the beginning, you can use the Roasting Station next to the Elder’s House. Your settlers might also go foraging for Blueberries around your island.
- Bed: Craft a Bed at the Carpenter’s Bench a Bed by using 10 Wood Logs of the same type and 10 Wool.
If you do not provide them with enough of these necessities, the settlers might protest and leave your settlement.
Assigning Jobs to Settlers
- Select a settler.
- Press C to open Settlement Interface.
- Navigate to Assign Work tab.
- Select your prefered task.
- Create a Zone or specify an area.
- Set a priority for work.
- Your settler will start working!
There are two major job types:
- Work tasks that don’t require zone: These tasks can be done in any area of your island. These include tasks like fishing, farming, and hunting.
- Work tasks that require a zone: On the other hand, some tasks can only be done in a specific zone. These include specialized tasks, such as Forestry and Animal Husbandry.
There are four key jobs:
- Farming: Settlers automatically plant the crops and replant them once harvested. You will need to place a Chest nearby, stocked with seeds. Ensure that this chest is kept pretty closeby, so the settlers can access it easily.
- Fertilizing: Settlers can fertilize the planted crops to make them grow faster. To do this, assign a fertilize zone and keep a chest nearby, stocked with fertilizer.
- Animal Husbandry: Settlers tend to domestic animals, such as Sheep and Cow. Build a fence to keep these animals in place. Also build Feeding Troughs and place Wheat inside them to ensure that the animals are happy and multiplying at a substantial rate.
- Forestry: Settlers can chop the trees down for wood and later replant the area in certain designated zones. You can specify the zone where your settlers can automatically replant tree saplings. This will ensure that you can an endless supply of timber.

If you don’t assign them any specific gear, they will grab the best gear from the chest by default. However, once you start progressing in the game and have specific defensive objectives, you can start equiping your settlers using following steps:
- Press C to open Settlement Interface.
- Navigate to the Equipment tab.
- Choose the gear you want to equip them with.
Note: You can also offer them gear manually (for individual) by chatting with them personally.
Keeping Your Settlers Happy
Keeping your settlers happy isn’t just a ‘nice to have’ thing in Necesse. If your settlers aren’t happy, they might protest. This can manifest in decreased productivity and an increase in the shop prices. In worst cases, if left too unhappy for too long, your settlers might straight up leave the settlement.
So, ensuring that your settlers are happy is extremely important. Your settlers’ happiness is largely dependent on five key things: Food Quality, Room Size, Furniture, Diet Variety, and Settlement Size. Use the following tricks to keep your settlers smiling and satiated:
- Offer them finer food. Your settlers eat the food you store in the designated storage units. Higher the quality of food, higher the rate of happiness.
| Food Type | Increase in Settler Happiness |
| Simple Food | +10% |
| Fine Food | +20% |
| Gourmet Food | +3% |
- Offer them bigger rooms. Bigger the rooms, bigger the settlers’ smiles.
| Room Type | Room Size | Increase in Settler Happiness |
| Baby | 0-9 Tiles | 0% |
| Tiny | 10-19 Tiles | +4% |
| Small | 20-24 Tiles | +8% |
| Mediocre | 25-29 Tiles | +10% |
| Decent | 30-39 Tiles | +12% |
| Large | 40-49 Tiles | +15% |
| Huge | 50-59 Tiles | +18% |
| Enormous | 60+ Tiles | +20% |
- Offer them better furniture. Different types of furniture end up increasing your settlers’ happiness. We recommend starting off with the basics, such as beds, chairs, and tables, and then moving on to creative items, such as dressers, flowerpots, and clocks, to elevate your furniture type.
| Furniture Type | Required Pieces of Furniture | Increase in Settler Happiness |
| Plain | None | 0% |
| Dull | One | +4% |
| Simple | Two | +7% |
| Nomal | Three | +10% |
| Good | Four | +13% |
| Impressive | Five | +15% |
| Wonderful | Six | +17% |
| Unrivaled | Seven | +20% |
- Offer them a variety in diet. Your settlers can theoratically keep eating the same type of food forever. However, offering them a diverse set of dishes can elevate their happiness score.
| Diet Variety Type | Food Dishes Offered | Increase in Settler Happiness |
| No Variety | One | 0% |
| Little Variety | 2-4 | +10% |
| Somewhat Varied | 5-7 | +20% |
| Varied Nicely | 8-11 | +30% |
| Extremely Varied | 12+ | +40% |
- Keep the settlement size small. Crowding a settlement leads to diminishing happiness scores. Bigger the settlement size, lesser the settler happiness.
| Settlement Size | No. of Settlers | Settler Happiness Score |
| Huge | 24+ | 0 |
| Large | 18-23 | +10% |
| Medium | 12-17 | +20% |
| Small | 6-11 | +30% |
| Tiny | 0-5 | +40 |
- Do not make your settlers share bedrooms. If you do so, the happiness score will keep going down.
| Number of Settlers in a Bedroom | Decrease in Happiness Score |
| One | 0% |
| Two | -20% |
| Three | -30% |
| Four | -40% |
