With the release of the Dangerous Horizons expansion for Icarus, players can now refine and use oil. I had to do multiple steps to finally gain refined oil, as the process is a bit lengthy. But by following this guide, you can refine oil with ease.
How to Refine Oil Organically in Icarus Dangerous Horizons
Before you actually start refining oil, you need to complete a bunch of upgrades. Dangerous Horizons expansion now brings Tier 5 Tech Tree to the game. Once you have unlocked that, you need to further unlock the following items:

After crafting the above items, follow the steps given below to start refining oil:
- Place the Organic Extractor at your desired location. I recommend using two Organic Extractors to speed up the process.
- Collect Plant Fiber or Crops and place them into the Organic Extractor to convert them into Biofuel.
- Next, place your Natural Oil Refiner and connect it with the Organic Extractor using the Biofuel pipe. What this will do is transfer the Biofuel to be converted into Oil.
- Finally, you just need to place either an oil can (20,000 capacity) or an oil barrel (150,000 capacity) into the Natural Oil Refiner to start collecting oil. I recommend putting 10 to 20 oil cans at once to fully collect the refined oil.
How to Refine Oil From the Ground in Icarus Dangerous Horizons
Apart from using Biofuel to get Refined Oil, you can also use certain crafted items to collect the Crude Oil present naturally in Icarus. I personally found this way more exhausting as it requires you to collect more items. But if you want to use this method, you first need to craft the following items:

Follow the steps given below to refine oil from the ground after you have the above items:
- Open your map and look for black smudges on the map as shown in the image below. These locations are your Crude Oil deposits. You need to carry the items crafted above to these locations along with oil cans or oil barrels.
- Place your Crude Oil Refiner and Crude Oil Generator, and connect those two using the Crude Oil Piping tool.
- At the location of the Crude Oil deposits, place your Pump Jack to start mining for oil. I would recommend against using multiple Pump Jacks until you have a decent power supply, as the Crude Oil Generator powering the pumping slows down if multiple are connected.
- Place either an oil can (20,000 capacity) or an oil barrel (150,000 capacity) into the Crude Oil Refiner to start collecting oil once all the parts are connected using the Crude Oil Piping tool.
By following these two ways, you can successfully collect refined oil which you can later use to craft more items.
