Key Points
- Sanity is a state meter that keeps you sane in the game; losing it will eventually lead to your death.
- The game has many items that will help you restore Sanity in smaller doses to large doses.
- The difficulty of the game will also have an effect on the Sanity drain.
- Sanity will not drain in some levels of the game, but in others, you will see it drain at a quicker rate than normal.
Sanity Overview
| Sanity Meter | Shows the sane status of the character |
| Cureable | Yes |
| Items that restore Sanity | Almond Water, Energy Bar, Juice, and Moth Jelly |
| Difficulty Effect on Sanity | Yes |
List of items to restore Sanity

- Almond Water: It restores 50% of your Sanity loss.
- Moth Jelly: It will restore 35% of your Sanity loss. You must use bug spray on flying moths to spawn the Moth Jelly item.
- Juice and Energy Bar: Both will restore around 25% of your Sanity.
Pack as much Almond Water as possible with you; if you can’t find it, then resort to using Juice and Energy Bar to take care of the losing Sanity.
Difficulty affects Sanity

Difficulty will tremendously influence your Sanity deceleration rate.
- If you are playing on Easy difficulty, you will not have to deal with the Sanity bar. Basically, here, you have infinite Sanity to do anything in the game.
- Playing on Normal or Hard, both will drain the Sanity at a normal speed.
- If you are stepping into the Nightmare mode, then the Sanity drain will be 1.5x faster compared to the Normal and Hard modes.
While difficulty not only brings changes to some puzzles in the game, like the opening puzzles on vending machines or elevator doors, it also influences the Sanity system of the game.
FAQs
Where can I view the Sanity bar in Escape the Backrooms?
Open up your inventory by pressing I on the keyboard. Here you will see a small box on the right with the picture of a brain. The picture of a brain will also appear broken, the more you lose your Sanity.
Does the game inform the player about Sanity loss?
Yes, you will start seeing colorful smiles on your screen, as your character will say, “What happened? I must be low on Sanity,” after you lose a certain amount of Sanity. If you don’t immediately treat the Sanity loss, you are on your way to death.
When will Sanity smileys appear on the screen?
You will start seeing the smiles appear on the screen once the Sanity meter goes below 10%. It serves as the last indicator to restore Sanity or go insane after a few minutes.
