Hytale’s world is massive and has long distances to travel. Naturally, you’ll look for faster ways to move around, and animals seem like the perfect solution. While mounting animals is planned for the game, the current systems are still limited. This guide explains what you can and cannot do with animals in Hytale at present, as well as how mounting is expected to function.

You’ll encounter both wild and domestic creatures across different zones, including horses, cows, pigs, chickens, and more. You cannot mount wild animals. In domestic ones, only horses, tetrabirds, and camels are available to mount. While these animals are fully present in the world, advanced systems like taming, pets, and permanent mounts are still under development during Early Access.
How to Mount Animals in Hytale
At the moment, mounting animals in Hytale is not fully implemented. But before you mount any horses, you must prepare a Feed Bag. Follow the steps below to do it (Ignore steps 1-4 if you have a Farmer’s Workbench ready):
- Collect 4x Tree Trunk and 3x Stone. Any version of them will work.
- Open Pocket Crafting Menu (Tab key) and craft a basic Workbench and deploy it.
- Now collect 6x Tree Trunk and 20x Plant Fiber.
- Open the Workbench Menu and craft a Farmer’s Workbench and deploy it.
- Lastly, collect 10x Wheat, 5x Vegetable, 5x Fruit, and 10x Essence of Life.
- Open the Farmer’s Workbench Menu and craft a Feed Bag and deploy it at your desired spot.
Now here’s how you may mount animals in-game:
- Locate animals such as horses in open biomes where they naturally spawn.
- Use a Feed Bag to lure animals closer without chasing or startling them.
- Approach the animal carefully once it is near the Feed Bag. Press F to successfully mount it.
- In future updates, players will be able to interact and ride animals as proper mounts.
For now, any interaction with animals does not result in permanent ownership or true riding mechanics. Mounts like horses, camels, and tetrabirds are confirmed, but riding them is reserved for a later update.

How to Capture Animals in Hytale
While you can’t tame or mount animals yet, you can capture and relocate certain creatures. Small animals can be transported using a Capture Crate, which is crafted at the Farmer’s Workbench. Once equipped, the crate allows you to store compatible animals and move them to your base.
This is useful for building farms or keeping resources nearby, but captured animals do not become pets or mounts. Additionally, Feed Bags can be used to attract animals to a specific location. This helps keep animals near your base, though it only influences movement and behavior temporarily rather than creating ownership.
